EBO results and plant visit

Energy-intensive companies invest nearly a billion euros to reduce energy consumption

Oostende 24 june 2025, at the presentation of the preliminary figures from the EBO annual report (EnergieBeleidsOvereenkomsten between the Flemish government and industry), we welcomed a delegation from Minister Melissa Depraetere’s office, including advisor Bart Martens and representatives from essenscia.

The subsequent plant visit highlighted the differences in solar energy applications across various production sites. While Ostend Basic Chemicals’ solar panel park provides green electricity, Proviron’s solar thermal park ensures sustainable steam generation.

Almost 300 energy-intensive companies in Flanders will invest around €900 million over the coming years to achieve energy savings of 13.2 petajoules (PJ) by the end of 2026, which corresponds to the average annual energy consumption of almost 180,000 households. This is according to the first annual report of the new energy policy agreements, a unique collaboration between the government and the business community. The results were presented this week during a working visit by Deputy Prime Minister and Flemish Minister of Energy and Climate Melissa Depraetere to chemical companies Ostend Basic Chemicals and Proviron in Ostend. The chemical sector accounts for about one-third of the planned energy savings.
