The Plassendale Chemie site is located in the inner harbor of Ostend along the Ghent-Bruges canal. For years, the site has been a well-known place full of activity. The buildings reflect a rich history. Proviron’s administrative building is the original building from 1900, which served as “the director’s residence.” The pillars of the cast-iron gate at the entrance drive refer to the ‘industrial past’. Since then, the site has undergone many changes and has now grown into a ‘seveco’ business park, representing the largest chemical cluster in West Flanders.
With respect for people and the environment, the ‘ primary compounds’ for the products of the future are manufactured here in Ostend, such as bio-based plasticisers for applications in rubber, vinyl and nylon, additives for ‘green car tyres’, de-icing products for the aviation industry, etc.
A great deal of effort is being made at the site to create a ‘sustainable’ production environment. In addition to a solar panel park, the site is also equipped with a ‘thermal solar’ installation for steam production from a renewable source, the sun.

We love the sun at Proviron. Not for a day at the beach, but because of our environmental efforts in production. On sunny days, 60% of our steam production is provided by the solar mirror installation. This is a state-of-the-art installation in which sunlight is concentrated using parabolic mirrors onto a central cylinder containing thermal oil, which reaches a temperature of up to 320°. This allows us to generate steam for our production units in an environmentally friendly way.
But ‘respect for the environment’ is in our DNA, so Proviron is committed to minimizing its footprint in the little things too. For example, internal travel is done as much as possible by shared bicycles, and there is an active policy to encourage employees to cycle to work.
