In 2017, Proviron started research on indoor cultivation of microalgae. Right from the start, there was a great belief in the potential of microalgae, even though the concrete market application possibilities were not yet clear.

Pioneering work was done within the department to arrive at an operational indoor cultivation system. This proprietary and scalable system allowed the unit to continue to grow and produce high quality, permanent microalgae.

In 2024, after in-depth market research, the decision was made to position microalgae in the nutraceutical industry. The focus is on the production of Astaxantin, which is extracted from the microalgae culture.  In June 2024, the unit became independent and the spin-off axabio was launched.
