Storage & Handling Cryotech NAAC®

Storage and handling of Cryotech NAACCustomers frequently ask questions about solid deicers with regard to storage, handling, and application equipment. There are technical differences between sodium acetate deicers from various producers, usually in the formulation of anhydrous vs. trihydrate. Therefore, some differences in material issues are expected. The following information applies to Cryotech NAAC®, which is 97% anhydrous sodium acetate

Product handling

Sodium acetate pellets have a natural tendency to loosely stick to one another during storage. We recommend these procedures for emptying bags if compacted:

Big Bags 500kg or 1000kg

while holding the bag with a forklift, lower the bag a short distance onto the floor 2-3 times to loosen any compacted product on the bottom. Then, use the drawstring chute at the bottom of the bag (or knife to cut across the bottom) allowing the product to flow.

Bags 25kg

Drop the bag onto a hard surface at about a two foot height 2-3 times (similar to the way you loosen a bag of ice).

Storage

NAAC works fast because it quickly absorbs water. Packaged product should be kept indoors, in its original packaging until use.

Therefore, there are important storage considerations:

  • NAAC should be stored in its original container until operators are comfortable with alternative storage methods, like flat bulk storage.
  • Bulk product should be stored indoors, kept in a pile with swept-neat edges, and covered with plastic to prevent caking.
  • Storage in silos should be avoided.
  • Since NAAC absorbs water more easily than urea - making it work faster - it also requires care to avoid caking caused by excessive moisture.
  • Like any solid deicer, excessive handling may cause dustiness.

Equipment considerations

NAAC may be applied with existing solid deicer spreading equipment. Spreaders should be calibrated for accurate application. NAAC weighs 0,7g/cm³, almost as much as urea.

When temperatures are above freezing, acetates biodegrade naturally when exposed to air. By-products of this process can result in unsightly biological growth and superficial staining/corrosion.By-products of this activity can result in unsightly biological growth and superficial staining/corrosion.

Therefore, the exterior of application equipment should be rinsed routinely with warm water. As the deicer season winds down, product remaining in spreaders should be removed to a stockpile and equipment should be cleaned with hot, soapy water.

Do not store loaded spreading equipment outside in the weather.

Personel protection

Contact of NAAC with skin or eyes may cause mild irritation and excess inhalation of dust may irritate the upper respiratory tract. Therefore, operators should wear suitable protective clothing. At a minimum this includes safety glasses with side shields and rubber gloves. Adequate ventilation is important to minimize dust levels. See the MSDS for additional information.
